Facebook and the news faked by us!

Who will take responsibility for providing trustworthy news?

Image result for business ethics

About Business Ethics- Business ethics is the study of appropriate business policies and practices regarding potentially controversial subjects including corporate governance, insider trading, bribery, discrimination, corporate social responsibility, and fiduciary responsibilities.

So, business ethics is all about ethics or morals which are either supported by society or abolished by society.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg clarifying about data mining and data privacy issues.

  • Let's take a real-time example for looking into case seriously:
The 2016 election season generated many headlines, some of which are notable for being blatantly false. Fake news ranged from, “the Pope endorsed Donald Trump” all the way to “Hilary Clinton is running a child sex ring out of a pizza shop.”
Did “fake news” influence the outcome of the 2016 US Presidential election? While the answer is unclear, one thing is certain. The rise of fake news has reached unprecedented levels and has raised serious concerns about how citizens receive their news and form opinions.

So, I think the increase in fake news has several sources. Social media platforms like Facebook gave these stories the same visibility as news publications, such as those from the New York Times or Wall Street Journal. Moreover, these posts often had higher engagement rates (likes and comments) resulting in them receiving even higher visibility and prevalence in users’ news feeds.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg initially downplayed the problem, calling it a “pretty crazy idea” that fake news on Facebook influenced the election. Zuckerberg has since begun to address the fake news issue, but warns, “We must proceed very carefully… and must be extremely cautious about becoming arbiters of truth ourselves.”

More examples for having a clear view:

Fake News of Death of Mr. Amitabh Bacchan's death just took the Indian public crazy. In Mumbai, the public came on roads for the rally and stood in front of  'Jalsa' (Bacchan's house) for seeing him.

* A message going viral on social media platform Facebook and instant-messaging application WhatsApp claims that new surveillance rules will come into place after the Ayodhya verdict.

FAKE ALERT: Old, unrelated images shared as that of 'JNU student.
A Twitter user who goes by the handle "@happyappy" posted two photos along with a caption in Hindi that translates to, "Its not okay to torture little girls studying in JNU. If they don't finish there studies at such a young age, how will they make a career and how will they get married?Poor girls". Later this news was flashed on Facebook also.

  • But after these many national and international incidences actions were taken and lets have a view on what actions were taken:
The Society of Professional Journalists has a code of ethics with four principles: seek truth and report it; minimize harm; act independently; and be accountable and transparent. But the transition to online platforms has fundamentally changed journalism. Google and Facebook control 80 percent of ad revenues; the same revenue source that news publishers depend on. Moreover, more than 40 percent of people now get their news from social media networks – making Facebook a
de facto middleman in people’s intake of news.

To conclude it all I just want to tell you the current scenerio:
Facebook is taking the problem seriously, albeit with a great deal of caution. They have introduced efforts to help users spot fake news and inject indicators of trust (disputed tags) into their posts in partnership with a few institutions. They have also banned fake news sites from advertising on the network.

Is Facebook having an obligation for addressing the Fake News problem? If so, what can we do about it. Please let me know.

The true facts about Ethical Organizations...

There are many ideas about the factors that contribute to the ethics of an organization.  These ideas range from ethical leadership to a concern for stakeholders to having a mission beyond economic success. While these ideas seem likely, there is very little evidence to support them. More importantly, there is often little you can do to affect these factors. A company that makes coat hangers is limited in the extent to which it can make its mission inspiring. So a team of researchers set out to isolate actionable factors that contribute to an organization’s ethics. By relying on publicly available data together with survey research on over 100 companies, the team built a survey instrument now widely used to measure the ethical performance of organizations.  Their research found three factors that any organization can use to improve its ethics.
